Those who tremble uncontrollably should enlighten their fellow human beings

Quite a few people suffer from trembling hands and limbs for various reasons. Patients should deal with the uncontrollable tremor in an offensive manner. This means that those affected should inform their social environment about the neurological disorder. An inner tiredness can be reduced. If necessary, people can also offer help.

Advertise more respect and help
Uncontrollable tremors mean stress for those affected. Many are embarrassed about the uncontrollable movements. Some react with withdrawal, because it is not uncommon for the twitching movements to become more noticeable through an inner tension. The movements should not be embarrassing and should not tempt you to retreat, warns Dr. Frank Bergmann, Chairman of the Professional Association of German Neurologists (BVDN). It makes sense to explain to others that it is a "neurological movement disorder". This would enable the other party to be more considerate and offer help.

Shaking hands can make it difficult to drink from a mug or put on clothes, for example. In addition to the hands, the head or voice can also be affected. There is no concrete cause for the essential tremor, which is still incurable. Tremor is the most common clinical finding for involuntary tremors. The disease is progressive and is getting worse. There are a number of medications that can make everyday life a little easier for those affected. These are prescribed when "first restrictions become noticeable".

Reduce stress and inner unrest
Stress and inner restlessness can intensify the tremors, which is why it is worthwhile to learn relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation or autogenic training. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol and caffeine. Although the alcohol alleviates the symptoms at first, the complaints appear all the more violent the next day. Excessive alcohol consumption also damages the cerebellum, which is responsible, among other things, for balance. (sb)
