Authority warns of poisonous rhododendron honey: consumption could lead to severe poisoning.
(16.09.2010) The Hessian Ministry of Consumer Protection is currently warning of the consumption of Turkish honey. The honey comes from the Turkish Black Sea coast and was apparently increasingly imported to Germany, especially Hesse. The honey can lead to serious poisoning, as the Ministry of Consumer warns.
In a sample of the honey, a very high content of the toxic plant substance grayanotoxin was found in laboratory tests. As the Ministry of the Environment confirmed, five grams of the toxic substance were enough to trigger nausea and vomiting, dizziness, gastrointestinal cramps and diarrhea. In severe cases of poisoning with the substance, there may also be a drop in blood pressure, a slow heartbeat or even heart failure or respiratory arrest. The honey should therefore be disposed of and not eaten until further details are known. (sb)
